If the Admiral lets us choose to leave the ship for some ports, why do we get such limited warning about being able to disembark?

I thought I did. I remember being strangled, blacking out, and then waking up here. But even if I did, what's it mean? I'm alive now. That's what matters.

Our lives are over. Finding the Admiral doesn't change that.
